Jimmy Stewart waves goodbye from the deck of the Italian superliner ‘Conte Di Savoia’ as the ship backs away from her Manhattan pier on August 3, 1939. Stewart was one of the thousands of American tourists who were stranded in Europe when the Second World War broke out less than a month after this photograph was taken.
